Makeni City Mayor, His Worship AbuBakarr Kamara, popularly known as “Lamtales,” held a meeting with traders at the Makeni City Council hall today the 21st of January, 2025. The brief but significant gathering focused on addressing key issues affecting the city, particularly street lighting and waste management.
In his opening remarks, the mayor thanked the traders for prioritizing the meeting despite their busy schedules. He acknowledged their role in the city’s progress and highlighted the purpose of the gathering: addressing concerns about the absence of streetlights on Rogbaneh Road, a major thoroughfare in Makeni.
The mayor explained that while many streets in the central business district have benefited from street lighting projects, Rogbaneh Road has yet to be included. As the political head of the council, he emphasized his advocacy efforts to secure resources for development projects, citing limited revenue as a constraint especially in the own source revenue.
With a sense of pride, Mayor Kamara announced that Chernor Maju Bah, a member of the All People’s Congress (APC), widely known as “Cherecoco,” has pledged to fund the installation of streetlights on Rogbaneh Road. This development is expected to enhance safety and aesthetics along the street, which is one of Makeni’s most prominent and vibrant areas.
The mayor also urged traders and residents to ensure Rogbaneh Road remains clean and attractive. He highlighted the importance of proper waste management and called for vigilance against littering, particularly the disposal of plastics.
Samuel Oba Conteh, Chairman of the Bombali District Traders’ Union, expressed gratitude to the mayor for his commitment to the city’s growth. He pledged the union’s support in ensuring compliance with waste management regulations and maintaining cleanliness along Rogbaneh Road.
A resident of Rogbaneh Road, Mohamed Tholley, also extended his appreciation to both the mayor and MP Chernoh Maju Bah for their efforts. He pledged to play an active role in discouraging littering on the street.
In his closing remarks, Mayor Kamara reassured attendees of his continued advocacy for improved infrastructure and waste management services in Makeni. He acknowledged the financial and logistical challenges facing the council, including the frequent breakdown of waste collection vehicles, which has strained the council’s budget.
